AnoxKaldnes, a subsidiary of Veolia Water Technologies and a world leader in moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) based solutions, has been selected to provide its renowned space-saving and capacity-increasing solution for the upgrade of the Käppala wastewater treatment plant in Lidingö, Sweden. The plant, owned by the Käppala Association, serves over half a million people in 11 municipalities in the north and east of Stockholm.
AnoxKaldnes has entered into a contract with NCC, one of the leading construction companies in the Nordic region, to execute the project's construction and implementation of the new treatment works. The Käppala wastewater treatment plant is facing a growing load from affiliated municipalities as well as stricter emission requirements. Therefore, the Käppala Association aims to increase the plant's capacity to handle an incoming load equivalent to 900,000 population equivalents (p.e.) by 2050 and comply with the new emission permit, which will take effect in 2026.
The Käppala WWTP will become the largest MBBR system globally once completed. Each line of the current system has a volume of approximately 18,000 cubic metres and will be split into nine individual zones to meet the demanding new requirements. Thanks to the effectiveness of AnoxKaldnes MBBR systems, the five MBBR lines will handle 80% of the incoming pollutant load and flow.

The Käppala WWTP is constructed underground, and the activated sludge lines are blasted from the bedrock, exposing the raw bedrock walls of each line. AnoxKaldnes provided its patented AnoxK5X carrier, which is demonstrated to be ten times more durable than its competitors, to address this challenge. Logistics, MBBR carrier durability, and expertise were the three main reasons why AnoxKaldnes was chosen as the project's delivery partner. Read more about MBBR technology, here.
Jacob Bruus, the CEO of AnoxKaldnes, stated, "To be part of a great team working on this huge scale project to improve the environment in our own country makes me extremely proud — this is a historical win for AnoxKaldnes."
