With global efforts shifting towards achieving a more sustainable future, it has never been more important for companies like those in the pharmaceutical sector to follow suit and begin to incorporate energy efficient measures into every facet of their operations.

In 2019, the European Commission (EC) outlined its strategic approach to reducing the effect of the pharmaceutical industry on the environment, as part of its goal to achieve a sustainable Europe by 2030. Among the key areas listed for action were the continued promotion of greener manufacturing methods and the encouragement of further innovation with regards to water treatment technology for the sector.

In pharmaceutical manufacturing, a reliable and consistent delivery of purified, treated water is crucial to production. At VWT UK, our Orion Series is the ideal solution to ensure a continual supply of high-quality process water in the necessary quantities to optimise a company’s processes. The system combines softening, reverse osmosis (RO) and continuous electro-deionisation (CEDI) technologies, which can be fully or partially hot water sanitised and is available with a range of flow rates, from 0.5 to 20 m3/hr.

The new Orion S Series, our premium Orion model, integrates tried and tested processes with a range of sustainable features, providing an unrivalled water technology package that can help pharmaceutical companies meet their environmental targets. Developed to provide greater long-term operational savings in comparison with the classic (C series) and mid-range (E Series) Orion models, the Orion S optimises energy and water consumption to deliver our most sustainable water purification solution yet.

By installing or upgrading to the Orion S Series, customers can benefit from several sustainable features and benefits, including:

    • Chemical-free sanitisation
    • Integral recovery RO and concentrate recycle
    • Low energy full fit membranes
    • Increased water efficiency process enhancements
    • Reduced energy process enhancements
    • Reduced water discharge and product flow during recycle
    • An energy saving ‘standby mode’
    • A sustainability display detailing CO2, water and energy usage
    • And full compatibility with VWT’s AQUAVISTA digital monitoring services.

Through the use of the Orion S Series it is therefore possible to achieve a number of savings including up to a 30% reduction in the level of CO2 released during a plant’s operation, up to a 40% water footprint recovery and a minimal chemical footprint. Users can also rest assured that the system is made from 99% recyclable materials and supplied with an end-of-life recycle guide.

Furthermore, through its compatibility with our AQUAVISTA digital services engineers can remotely access and monitor operational data, maintenance schedules, performance and cost KPIs. This can in turn allow manufacturers to reduce downtime, waste from spoiled batches of product as well as optimising maintenance costs and operator time. With AQUAVISTA Assist, operators can also be further reassured by the real-time online support provided by Veolia’s team of process experts.

By launching the Orion S Series, we have been able to integrate technology that would otherwise only have been provided in addition on a case-by-case basis. Previously, VWT UK has worked with large-scale pharmaceutical manufacturers to install more sustainable devices to support second-generation Orion plants. Specifically, this was through the installation of additional recovery RO systems. With the launch of the Orion S, which has recovery RO systems integrated as standard, we have been able to create the ideal system to suit the needs of pharmaceutical manufacturers and several of these companies have since approached VWT UK requesting to upgrade to this latest system.

At VWT UK, we always endeavour to find the best solution for our customer so we have also developed an Orion Calculator, which factors in customer requirements and site logistics to ensure the ideal water purification system is specified for each individual project.

In addition to this, we are committed to providing a lifetime service to our customers. Based across the UK, our team offers preventative and corrective after-sales programs to ensure the long-term efficient operation of our installed plants.
