Since it was founded in 1984, Hydrotech (a subsidiary of Veolia Water Technologies) has delivered more that 11,000 filtration products to the global water treatment market. Here, we take a look at two of Hydrotech’s key products and the recent improvements that have been made to the highly successful portfolio.

    Hydrotech Discfilter

First launched in the mid 1990s, the Hydrotech Discfilter provided a compact filtration system for the polishing of municipal effluent and industrial water reuse. Utilising woven cloth filters mounted on multiple discs, the Discfilter boasted two to three times more filter area than other drum filters of the same external dimensions. Mechanical and self-cleaning via a counter current backwash system, the system has had nearly 30 years of strong global sales.

However, with more than 50 product improvements, Hydrotech has now launched a new iteration, the Hydrotech Performance Filter (HPF). Housing a greater number of discs, each with a 10% greater filtration area, the HPF provides more than twice the filtration capacity of its predecessor, and yet it is more compact. That’s thanks to PAGUS™ technology, an innovative Particle Guidance System, which boosts the speed of solid particle extraction so that fewer units are required and more can be achieved in a smaller physical footprint.

    Other improvements include:

    • A new drum design manufactured in a special corrosion-resistant alloy including Duplex or Super Duplex steel
    • The number parts per disc have been reduced by 75% and now have a simplified replacement process - cutting down on maintenance time and costs
    • The cover can now be opened in both directions for ease of access – manual opening is also still available in case of power outage
    • An optimised hydraulic design to minimise pressure loss
    • Enhanced water communication between drum, discs and solids trough
    • A new patent pending lightweight spray bar with 50% fewer parts and a geometrically failsafe design.

    Hydrotech Drumfilter

Also launched in the 1990s, the Hydrotech Drumfilter was a nother mechanical self-cleaning filter for municipal and industrial water recovery applications. However, in this case it was specifically designed for applications where it was essential to prevent filtered solids from fragmenting during filtration. As such, it only used gravity to direct the water and no additional pressure – this along with few moving parts ensured the system had a long life and low maintenance costs. Furthermore, with a modular design, it was easy to adapt the Drumfilter to the required flow capacity and performance, even in terms of drum and tank materials for use in differing environments.

Building on the success of this product, Hydrotech has now launched the new and improved Hydrotech Value Drumfilter (HVDF) series with a 20% increased drum capacity. This is thanks to a breakthrough in filter panel technology – the Hydrotech ALPHAFLEX™ – which has a larger filtration area and absorbs more particles than other alternatives on the market. This is just one of 50 improvements that have been made to the original model, which now focuses on reduced maintenance, increased component quality and simplified operation, therefore solving a number of common problems for municipal and industrial engineers.

    These improvements include:

    • A new trough design with a collection area up to 50% larger than the previous model, plus integrated front splash protection
    • Improved hydraulic design minimising unwanted pressure loss
    • A saving of up to 95% of the water in the solids trough in comparison with traditional filter panels
    • A new drive arrangement with less components enabling a simpler construction, eliminating corrosion issues and offering safer operation
    • Automatic lubrication of the main bearing and support wheels for reduced maintenance.
    • Faster and more efficient particle collection.

The new HVDF is also delivered ready for upgrades, such as high-pressure washing and chemical pipes, to make customisation easy, efficient and cost-effective.

Furthermore, the ALPHAFLEX™ panels can be retrofitted into existing Hydrotech Drumfilters to improve efficiency.

From its first innovation in the mid-eighties of the Triangle filter, to these two new iterations of the popular Discfilter and Drumfilter, quality has always been Hydrotech’s core focus.
